Meatballs

1979

directed by: Ivan Reitman

Another brief departure.  This was on IFC the other night and I taped it.  Honestly, the best thing about this movie was the fact that The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret is coming back January 6 on IFC.

So Meatballs.  Obviously  a Billy Murray comedy from his hey-day of the late 70’s – early 80’s .  Yet I hadn’t seen it.  Nor have I witnessed anyone reference this movie.  Directed by Reitman.  Co-written by Ramis.  I mean these guys would go on to work on Caddyshack (Ramis & Murray) , Stripes (all of em) , & Ghostbusters I & II (all of em again) .  Some of the best comedies of all time. And then there’s Meatballs.

So Meatballs is a Summer Camp flick, albeit before there were many (if any) mainstream Summer Camp flicks.  But the characters are all a little meh and dated; I didn’t really care for the Rudy kid either.  I mean there aren’t really any classic scenes, and the gags feel rushed, especially any without Murray.  So Billy just riffs through his dialogue, obviously just saying whatever comes off the top of his head.  The morning PA announcements are okay, but at the end of the day, nothing is that quotable.  Music is decent for ’79.  It’s an affable, feel-good pic.  More reminiscent of Ramis’s later stuff  (Analyze This, Bedazzled, Year One).  Also, I don’t think I’ll ever hear these words come out of someone’s mouth, “Oh, Meatballs? That’s my favorite Bill Murray flick”
